How to Use Beep Cards: A Complete Guide

Beep cards are versatile, reloadable contactless smart cards used in Metro Manila for public transportation, toll payments, and shopping at partner stores. Introduced in 2015, beep cards replaced the magnetic card system and are managed by AF Payments Incorporated. You can purchase and reload beep cards at various locations, including train stations, online platforms like Shopee and Lazada, and partner terminals.

Using beep cards offers numerous benefits, such as increased convenience, efficiency, and safety. With beep cards, there’s no need to carry cash, and transactions are faster due to the contactless tap-to-pay system. This seamless experience extends across transportation modes, toll roads, and selected retail establishments, making everyday travel and shopping more straightforward and efficient.

What Are Beep Cards?

Beep cards are reloadable contactless smart cards used in Metro Manila primarily for paying fares on public transportation, toll roads, and shopping at partner stores. Managed by AF Payments Incorporated which is owned by Ayala Corporation and Metro Pacific Investments Corporation, they were introduced in 2015 to replace the older magnetic card system. Beep cards offer a modern, efficient way to handle payments, streamlining the user experience across various services.

These cards are important as they simplify transactions and reduce the need for cash, enhancing safety and convenience. By using beep cards, commuters spend less time in queues and avoid the hassle of handling small change. Without a beep card, individuals may face longer wait times, increased exposure to germs through cash handling, and the inconvenience of needing exact fare or change for every transaction.

If a beep card expires, any remaining balance can be transferred to a new card within 12 months of the expiry date, with a transfer fee of PHP 150. After this 12-month grace period, any untransferred balance on the expired card will be forfeited. For example, if a card expires on July 31, 2024, the balance can be transferred until July 31, 2025.
